Initial booking appointment

When you have had a positive pregnancy test you can contact us directly to arrange your first appointment with a midwife whether you live in Warrington or surrounding areas.

Antenatal Clinic

Our Antenatal Clinic at Warrington Hospital is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Our contact number is 01925 662260.

We also hold regular vaccine clinics on a Saturday. Your midwife will discuss vaccines in pregnancy with you and help you to arrange appointments for these.

If you require urgent advice, our Maternity Triage is open 24 hours, seven days a week. Call 01925 275200.

Antenatal Day Unit (ANDU)

Our Antenatal Day Unit (ANDU) is a midwife-led assessment area located on the ground floor of Croft Wing, Warrington Hospital. If you require additional monitoring during your pregnancy that does not need you to stay in hospital, it may take place in ANDU. 

Your midwife, GP or obstetrician can refer you to us for ongoing surveillance during your pregnancy. ANDU is an appointment only service.

We offer monitoring for conditions such as raised blood pressure, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy and gestational diabetes.

We also have a fetal medicine consultant who provides a specialist ultrasound service should the need arise.
Postnatal care can be provided if your baby is being cared for on the Neonatal Unit.

What to expect from your booking appointment

Your first appointment with a midwife (also called the booking appointment) should take place before you are 10 weeks' pregnant as you will be offered some tests that should be carried out before 10 weeks. These tests will help us to determine the right pathway of care for you.

During this appointment, you will be asked questions about you, your medical history, health and lifestyle. You will also be asked about any previous pregnancies to help us identify if there are any reasons we may need to monitor you more closely throughout your pregnancy, for example, if you had any complications in a previous pregnancy or you have any medical conditions such as diabetes.

You will be offered an ultrasound scan at around 12 to 14 weeks to help determine your expected due date. It is important you attend your first appointment as this is when your scan will be ordered.

You may be booked under a 'midwifery led care pathway' or if you have any existing risk factors or go on to develop any complications during your pregnancy, you may be referred to the obstetric consultants (doctors who specialise in pregnancy and childbirth) to support your care. In some cases, your care will be shared between your midwife and the hospital doctors.

Regardless of whether you are booked for midwifery-led care or shared care with the obstetrician doctors, your care will be continuously reviewed throughout your pregnancy to ensure the wellbeing of both you and your baby and to support you with choices for labour and birth. If the need arises, your midwife will refer you to the hospital for any additional support with your pregnancy.
