Ophthalmology

General introduction

We provide care for a wide range of eye conditions including:

  • emergency eye care
  • age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
  • children’s eye conditions and diseases
  • cataracts
  • cornea
  • diabetic retinopathy
  • medical retina conditions
  • glaucoma
  • oculoplastics (treats the tissues surrounding the eye ball, including eyelids, extra-ocular muscles and tear system)
  • neuro-ophthalmology
  • squint / ocular motility (eye movement)
  • low vision

We have a wide range of diagnostic equipment which is used to monitor various eye diseases. This often means you may have a variety of tests during your visit and see different eye care professionals at your appointment.

Types of clinics

Most of the appointments are face to face, but we do offer telephone clinics for certain clinics.

We undertake “virtual clinics” whereby you will come to the eye clinic to have various clinical tests completed and the results are then analysed by a senior clinician on a different day. The outcome of the tests will be sent to you by letter.

The service also has an Eye Clinic Liaison Officer to support patients. Read more on how to access this service.

All general and specialist ophthalmology clinics are held in Daresbury Wing, Warrington Hospital. There are some services that are held at Halton Health Hub for Orthoptic and Optometry services.

Some day case procedures are undertaken in Daresbury Wing such as injections and laser treatments. All other surgery is undertaken in main Theatres in Warrington Hospital. Please do check your letter which will advise you where you should attend on your appointment day.

How to access this service

Referrals are received via GP’s, community optometrists, diabetic eye screening, urgent care, health visitors and other heath professionals.

Your GP or optometrist can refer you to the eye clinic. We are not able to provide a walk in service and all patients require a referral to access the service.

For routine children’s referrals your child’s health visitor or GP can refer your child to Orthoptics.

For those individuals that are already under the care of the hospital eye service and have concerns regarding their condition, they can call the ophthalmology triage line on 01925 662694. This telephone number is for urgent enquiries and not for routine queries or appointment issues.

If you have any concerns regarding your eyes / vision there is also an urgent eyecare service in the community This service is free service for urgent eye conditions. This is not a service for routine sight tests.
