Ward B12 – Forget Me Not Unit

General introduction

Ward B12, the Forget Me Not Unit, is our specialist ward for caring for patients in hospital who are living with dementia.

The ward is designed to provide relaxation and stimulation for patients who need expert hospital care, but who also have dementia.

The ward includes several dementia friendly features, such as a comfortable lounge area with a traditional-style fireplace, and a specially designed dementia garden to support wellbeing and safe outdoor access.

How to access this service

The admission criteria for the ward ensures that patients receive appropriate care in the Forget Me Not Unit.

It is important to note that not every patient with dementia who is admitted to our hospitals is cared for on the ward. Patients may be referred to another specialist ward to treat their medical or surgical condition and to ensure they receive the appropriate level of care.

Additionally, due to capacity reasons, not everyone will be able to be admitted to the ward. However, all staff across the Trust receive dementia training appropriate to their role, ensuring dementia aware care is provided throughout the organisation.

About the team

The multi-disciplinary team includes medical, nursing and therapy staff who are experts in general medical care as well as the specific needs of people living with dementia. We also have an activities coordinator, who supports the team in providing meaningful, personalised activity. We encourage carers and families to be actively involved in these activities, helping create familiar, comforting and engaging experiences for the individual.
