Stroke Service

General introduction

Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals (WHH) is part of the regional stroke pathway in partnership with Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Patients in the early stage of a stroke (hyperacute phase) will be sent to Whiston Hospital, where they may receive thrombolysis treatment.

Once they are medically well enough, patients will be transferred back to the Stroke Service at WHH for the rehabilitation phase of their recovery. This will be overseen by our team of stroke and rehabilitation consultants, specialist nurses and neurophysiotherapists.

We also have an outpatient service to provide ongoing support for our patients who have suffered a stroke and provide an urgent access clinic five days a week for patients with suspected transient ischaemic attack (TIA).
