Orthoptics – Stroke service
Last updated: Monday 02 December 2024General introduction
We provide services to patients who have experienced a stroke or acquired brain injury as visual complications following these events can occur in up to 60% of patients.
Visual complications following stroke or acquired brain injury can increase length of stay in hospital and lead to an increased risk of falls and reduced independence.
We provide a full orthoptic investigation, diagnosis and treatment and / or advice. Patients who require further investigation will be referred to an appropriate ophthalmologist. The orthoptist can liaise with community and hospital optometrists to ensure patients are wearing their correct and up to date glasses prescription. We can offer support by the Eye Clinic Liaison Officer or the Vision Impairment Team in the community.
Patients will be issued with a ‘Vision Passport’ detailing what was found during an assessment and the advice and treatment prescribed. This can be helpful for families and carers to understand the visual impairment.
