Department of Medicine for Older People


General introduction

The Department of Medicine for Older People (DMOP) cares for our patients who are primarily aged 65 and above.

The specialist team focus on supporting patients to return home from hospital as quickly as possible, and ideally avoid the need for admission to an inpatient bed on one of our wards.

The service has a number of sub-specialties that cover specific aspects of medicine for older people including:

  • Orthogeriatrics - this specialty focuses on fractures
  • Osteoporosis - this specialty provides proactive care for patients at high risk of fracture 
  • Perioperative medicine for older people having surgery (POPS) - this specialty supports patients aged 65 and above with specialist input before and after they undergo surgical procedures
How to access this service

Referral to the service is via GPs or other clinical provider, as appropriate.
