Day Case Unit (DCU)


General introduction

The Day Case Unit (DCU) has 10 single pods, which includes a theatre trolley, a patients’ lockable locker and a bedside table. Behind each trolley is a nurse call buzzer which is also the emergency call bell. There is also piped oxygen and a suction unit.

The DCU, which opened on the 2 April 2024, is situated on the second floor of the Captain Sir Thomas Moore (CSTM) Building.

The unit is open from 7.30am to 8pm, Monday to Friday.

How to access this service

Patients are referred by their GP to the service required.
Patients are then placed on a waiting list if referred for surgery.

  • Dental and maxillofacial procedures.

Surgeons and anaesthetists see all the patients prior to theatre and consent forms are signed. There is a resident medical officer (RMO) on site 24/7.
All patients having a general anaesthetic attend a pre-operative clinic prior to admission where all relevant investigations are done prior to admission.

Patients are followed up as ward attenders on the unit if discharged with a wound drain.
