Cardio-Respiratory Department - CPAP

General introduction

CPAP stands for continuous positive air pressure. A CPAP device blows air into the upper airway during sleep, via a mask, to prevent the airway from collapsing and causing obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

The amount of pressure required varies between people and you will be prescribed the correct pressure required to support your airways. There are a variety of masks available which can cover the nose or the nose and mouth. You will be fitted with a mask that is suitable for you at your clinic appointment. A correctly fitting mask is important for your therapy.

The CPAP service is located in the Cardio-Respiratory Department at Halton Hospital Nightingale Building.

This service is for our current CPAP patients. If you are waiting for results of a sleep study we are unable to help with this and you will need to contact the main hospital Outpatients department via the hospital switchboard (01925 635911).

If you would like to request replacement equipment or have a query please use the contact form.

How to access this service

Patients who suffer from symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) can be referred to our service by their GP.

Once you have been referred to our service for potential OSA, the Cardio-respiratory appointments team will contact you for a sleep study. Once this has been carried out the main Outpatient appointments team will arrange an appointment for a consultation with one of the sleep consultants, either in person or over the phone.

During this consultation the sleep consultant will go through the sleep study results with you and discuss different treatment options.

If your consultant recommends CPAP treatment, they will refer you to our service to start you on this therapy.

We offer individual CPAP set up sessions for patients and during this you will receive information about sleep apnoea, explain how to operate and maintain the CPAP device and fit your mask.
