Warrington Hospital staff share handwashing and safety tips with local primary school

Staff at Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals have visited pupils at Evelyn Street Primary Academy to share their top tips on staying safe, keeping hands clean and germs at bay.
The session, delivered to the reception classes by Gina Haddock, Paediatric Clinical Educator, and Jane Forber, Hospital Play Specialist, focused on what germs are and why it is so important to wash your hands correctly. Gina and Jane took the children through practical handwashing techniques using fun songs and a ‘super soap’ glitter trick.
The children were encouraged to practice their technique with a special lotion to visually see how effectively they had washed their hands. Children then placed their hands in the special UV light box to see which parts of their hands they missed and see how germs can ‘hide’ on hands.
Callum Porter, Early Years Teacher at Evelyn Street, said: “Our children loved Georgina and Jane’s visit during our handwashing workshop. Since their visit, our children have been observed talking about good hygiene and supporting each other by counting as they use the soap and water before lunch and snack. Thank you for a brilliant and informative workshop for our children at Evelyn Street.”
Alongside the handwashing tips, the workshop also shared information on how to stay safe on roads, using helmets and designated crossings, and how children can stay safe during hospital care.
The session was such a success that Gina and Jane brought the handwashing station back to young patients at the hospital, providing an informative and fun distraction for those staying on the Children’s Ward.
Gina said: “Introducing handwashing at an early age helps to promote healthy habits in childhood. Jane and I were delighted to be able to share this important safety topic with children in the hospital and in the community and were grateful to the teachers and children at Evelyn Street for such a warm welcome. It was fantastic to see the children so engaged with the activities and messages and to hear they are practicing their learning!”
