Warrington and Halton Hospitals

Walking Aid Amnesty

Warrington and Halton Hospitals: On the hunt for Walking Aids?

Hundreds of pairs of metal crutches and walking sticks have gone missing across the Warrington and Halton Borough - and we want your help to bring them back!

We are asking the public to support us by returning them back to the Hospital as part of our new walking aid amnesty which starts on Friday 1st September 2017

Often patients with new or temporary mobility issues such as breaks or sprains will leave the hospital with borrowed walking aids. These items, while useful to you at one point may no longer be needed and could be returned to help other patients.

Walking aids are costly; in fact, over the last year almost 4,700 walking aids were issued costing WHH close to £47,000. By returning unused metal crutches and metal walking sticks, you are helping us to save money and reduce waste. That extra money will go directly back into our services and facilities, which will help to support our ongoing efforts to provide the best care for our patients.

The Walking Aid Amnesty starts on Friday 1st September 2017 and drop-off points will be set up across WHH. We are asking patients to return their walking aids that are in good condition to the following locations between 8am and 8pm daily:

  • League of Friends Helpdesk, Main Entrance, Warrington Hospital
  • Accident and Emergency Department Reception, Warrington Hospital
  • Main Entrance, Cheshire and Merseyside Treatment Centre, Halton
  • Physiotherapy Reception, (2nd Floor) Healthcare Resource Centre, Widnes

Julie Blackburn, Team Lead Physiotherapist said

“We know that returning crutches or other equipment is the last thing on anyone’s mind when they’re back on their feet again and getting better. However, we feel it’s worth reminding people to just have a look around and ask them to hand crutches and metal sticks back in to the hospital if they are no longer needed.

“The amnesty will give people the chance to clear out the crutches that have been cluttering their home for months and will help replenish our stocks”.

If you have any other metal walking aids or borrowed equipment supplied by WHH please return them back to where they were supplied.
