About this service
Medical microbiology deals with the study of micro-organisms of medical importance capable of causing disease in human beings. This includes bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. The primary role of the clinical microbiology laboratory is to provide physicians with accurate and timely identifications of micro-organisms recovered from clinical specimens. Also to provide information on the susceptibility of these micro-organisms to antibiotics.
The department processes 180 000 samples each year. The range of sample types and investigations provided includes urines, faeces, sputum, swabs, tissue samples, blood and CSF. The department provides a wide repertoire of tests including investigations for MRSA, Clostridium difficile, gastroenteritis, meningitis, septicaemia, hepatitis, HIV and more.
The Microbiology department is fully accredited and staffed by a highly qualified team that includes 2 Consultant Microbiologists, Biomedical Scientists and Support Workers.
The Microbiology department is located on the Warrington site within Pathology, we currently do not offer Microbiology services at Halton, all investigations are carried out at the Warrington site.
